What is a Teken?
Teken is an oversight process for a sofer's Sta"m item that ensures the sofer is certified in halacha, writes in accordance with halachic standards, and is personally endorsed by a Rav from the Vaad Mishmeres Sta"m (VMS). Each item undergoes a VMS computer check to detect missing or extra letters and confirm it is handwritten, not printed. The process also includes collaboration with local Rabbanim, who certify their own magiim to check the item and issue a joint hashgachah with VMS. This structure allows communities to rely on their own Rabbanim's psak while maintaining rigorous standards. When a sofer is reliable and knowledgeable, it enables the computer and magiim to work more effectively, producing exceptionally kosher and mehudar Sta"m with minimal room for error.
